Fitness Canterbury Reopening on Thursday 14th May at 5:30am
Dear Fitness Canterbury Member,
We’re so excited to announce that Fitness Canterbury will be reopening on Thursday 14 May at 5.30 am. Normal 24 hour access will resume from this time.
How Will We Operate at Alert Level 2
Over the last week we have been busy preparing the gym to reopen. We have cleaned and sanitised all surfaces, machines and weights handles etc. We’ve even taken the paint brush to a few walls as well (hopefully you’ll be able to tell which ones)!
We will be spot cleaning all touch point surfaces including door handles, hand rails and machine upholstery on an hourly basis.
More thorough cleaning of equipment will be carried out twice daily. The first of which will be at 6.00 am, to clean all surfaces used during un-staffed hours.
We are increasing the amount of cleaning stations around the gym for trainers and members to use. It is highly recommended that you clean equipment before using it.
There are obviously a number of restrictions/regulations set out by the Government that will be put in place in order for us to run the gym safely. Some of these measures include:
Everybody must use their membership card to sign in. If you have lost/misplaced your card please see reception and we will issue you a new one. This is an absolute must for accurate contact tracing. If you bring in a friend to train that is not a member they must sign the visitor register at reception.
There is tape on the ground in the reception area. This outlines the safe distance from reception that must be observed in Alert Level 2. We can still have our usual conversations – we might just have to speak a little louder.
Please do not use the bar area as there is not enough room for the required social distancing.
Protein Shakes/ Product Sales:
We will be making Protein Shakes and selling products during Alert Level 2.
Using Gym Equipment:
This is where we ask that everyone works together to ensure that the gym can operate safely.
Please ensure that there is one free machine, bench, or piece of cardio equipment between you and another member. If someone would like to use the machine next to you, we would recommend (while keeping your 2 metre safe distance) moving away from your equipment during your rest period and letting the other member complete their set while you rest and vice versa.
There will be additional cleaning stations located around the gym. All equipment will be sanitised by our team throughout the day, but it is also recommended that everyone wipes down each piece of equipment before using it.
Due to Personal Trainers being in close proximity to their clients for longer than 4 minutes, they are required to use PPE for every session.
For One on One boxing sessions, clients must bring their own boxing gloves. We can no longer provide shared gloves!
Yoga Mats and Swiss Balls
During Alert Level 2 we cannot provide these due to their potentially high transmission risk.
We cannot run classes during Alert Level 2 as they don’t meet the social distancing and time requirements.
The water fountain will not be available during Alert Level 2. Please remember to fill up your own drink bottle prior to coming to the gym. If you do accidentally forget, we still have bottled water available for purchase at reception.
If You Are Feeling Unwell, Please Stay Home
Even if you feel you only have a cold, please do not come to the gym. Rest up and get yourself better. This is for your own safety but also the safety of other members and our staff.
It is also a requirement that all Fitness Canterbury Staff and Trainers are to remain home if they feel unwell. We are of course coming into the Cold and Flu session, and because of this there may be times where reception will be closed due to a shortage of staff.

What Fitness Canterbury will do to ensure we are protecting our Members and Staff on top of normal cleaning and maintenance duties.
- Clean/disinfect all machine upholstery daily – Regularly throughout the day.
- Clean/disinfect reception counter and bench tops – Regularly throughout the day.
- Clean/disinfect all door handles – Regularly throughout the day.
- Provide Hand sanitizers and Sanitizer Wipes throughout the gym – Effective hand hygiene is the best defence against corona virus.
What we expect of our members to ensure they are protecting themselves our staff and other fellow members.
As the corona virus continues to evolve, it is important to remember that effective hand and sneeze/cough hygiene is the best defense against viruses and can help prevent the spread of illness.
Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, before and after eating, and after going to the toilet
Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap is not available
Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of their elbow
Dispose of tissues in the bin immediately
If you’re unwell, with any of the symptoms including minor symptoms please stay at home to protect yourself and others

Please consider we have members of all age groups, and members with compromised immune systems. Please consider that even though symptoms in one person may seem minor – spreading it to other members may have severe consequences for them!
